Is there any way to set up Internet Explorer to delete the Cache after
Internet Explorer is shut down? Spyware got on my system and caused
problems.

Thank you;
David

Hi David,

On the Advanced tab of Internet Options you can scroll down, under
Security, and check the box to empty the TIF every time you exit IE.

Yes.

Open IE | Tools | Internet Options | Advanced tab |
scroll down to the bottom | check: Empty Temporary Internet Files folder
when browser is closed | click Apply | OK. Deletes the content of
C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name Here\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files but not the Content.IE5 or Content.MSO folders.
-----

To delete *all* Temporary Internet Files...

1) Start | Run | Type: inetcpl.cpl | OK
Or right click the Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop.
Or: Start | Settings | Control Panel | Internet Options.
Best to do this with all instances of Internet Explorer closed. Especially
if there are a large number of files.
2) On the General Tab, in the middle of the screen, click on Delete Files
3) Check the box Delete all offline content {This cleans >> C:\Documents
and Settings\YourNameHere\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files AND
C:\Documents and Settings\YourNameHere\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files\Content.IE5 and \Content.MSO (Created by an MS Office program)
4) Click on OK and wait for the hourglass icon to stop after it deletes the
temporary internet files
5) You can now click on Delete Cookies and click OK to delete cookies that
websites have placed on your hard drive.

I have Disk Cleaner set to run quiet at startup. Runs for 10 seconds or so
and exits. I also like the fact that, after you set it up, it cleans all
the following with one click (and/or automatically at boot). Makes XP's
Disk Cleanup look like a piker. XP's Disk Cleanup will *not* clean
Content.IE5.

Disk Cleaner will Clean:
Temporary Internet Files {Including the contents of the Content.IE5 folder}
Internet Cookies
Internet History
System Temporary Folder
Recent Documents
Run... Dialog List
Find Document List
Find Computer List
URLs in IE Address Bar
URLs in Shell Address Bar
Media Player Recent URLs
WinZip Recent Files
WinZip Extract To Folders
Paint Recent Files
WordPad Recent Files
Cleans Recycle Bin (what else?)
Opera Cache
Opera Cookies
Opera History
Opera Visited links
Opera Download History and Download folder
Firefox Cache
Firefox Cookies

First of all, let me confess that I am no expert on this setting as I could
never get it to work.

So that is why I am wondering if it was removed in newer versions of IE. I
am running version 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_qdr...

If anyone can elaborate it would be appreciated.

Michael

Hi Michael,

The option is there, in the version you mention, but it only seem to
delete the cache when logging off rather than when shutting down IE.

Hmm.

My eyesight isn't what it used to be - but I don't see it Bert.

I have 15 checkboxes in the Security section - but none has to do with
deleting the TIF.

Now I am really confused..

By the way, thank you for the tip about logging off - as opposed to simply
closing IE.

Michael

Solved it.

This option (to delete Temporary Internet files) is apparently only
available to the 'owner' account.

My PC has two users - and since I am the second account - I do not get this
option in IE even though I have administrator privileges.

Perhaps I should have said 'primary account instead of 'owner' account.

Sorry for the confusion.

Thanks Wes. Running Cache.reg did it for me.

Unfortunately I discovered a corrupted TIF (cache) in the process. But that
is also fixed now and all I have to do is close IE to clear the cache - as
opposed to logging off or rebooting.

Here is an important additional step.

Also close Outlook Express before the files are deleted for the TIF.

I need to clear IE cache somewhat frequently & the IE Advanced setting
option to clear cache on exit seems ideal - however - it would not clear
cache when running AVG or Avast virus programs which I use.

I installed the IE Privacy Keeper program ...
http://www.browsertools.net/IE-Privacy-Keeper/usersmanual.html
This program has the same function, clears cache optionally on close, start,
or shut-down and works with the virus programs - also has a few additional
nice options for selectively saving files & selective saving 'cookies and
other items ... the save cookie option works great here.

Keep having fun, Michael. :-)

Zero byte files in TIF

[[Note: when viewing Newsgroup messages Outlook Express dumps a series of
zero-byte files into the TIF. When Outlook Express is closed it fails to
cleanup these files. To delete these zero-byte files you must select the
option "Delete all offline files".]]

From...
Internet Explorer Tips and Tricks
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/ietips.htm

[[Outlook Express 5.5 and 6 place a zero byte file in TIF for every message
that you read. These files are only visible from Start | Find | Files or
Folders, not from Windows Explorer. ]]

[[The easy way to get rid of them if you use OE 5.5 or 6 is to open Internet
Explorer and go to Tools | Internet Options. In the Temporary Internet Files
Section choose "Delete files". In the next dialogue check the box for
"Delete all offline content" and click "OK".]]

I use that HOSTS file myself.

But what does that have to do with the TIFs?

Unfortunately it stopped working again. I.E. the TIF is no longer deleted
when I close IE.

As I mentioned earlier, I have had a tough time getting this to work
consistently over time.

I thought running Cache.reg had finally fixed it. But this time it is not
fixing it. Oh well.

Michael,

The cache.reg file fixes a problem where the "Empty temporary internet..."
option is missing in the Advanced tab. Is that the symptom you're
experiencing now?

The reason why the "Empty Temporary Internet files" option does not work is
that another program may be using the TIF Index and locked it. Here is some
more information:

Internet Explorer Does not Delete Temporary Internet Files on Close:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=814782

Additionally, to determine the applications that've locked the Index.dat,
you may use Process Explorer and use the Find Handles option to search for
"Index.dat" or "Content.IE5". This would give you a clue. Process Explorer
can be downloaded from Sysinternals.com Website.

Some examples / applications that use the TIF when running:

Outlook Express
Yahoo! Messenger
Internet Explorer
Microsoft Front Page

All of the above lock the index.dat (from one of my systems here)

Alternately, you may use the Disk Cleanup and configure a Sageset that
cleans only the TIF. See here for more information.

utility:

That's it Ramesh. The INDEX.DAT is locked by new software I installed
recently.

Thank you.

I just posted this to my ISP's DSL web site Support Forum (SBC-Yahoo DSL).
----------------------
I installed the new software that came with my SpeedStream 5100. Now when I
exit Internet Explorer 6 my TIF files (Temporary Internet Files) are not
deleted. This used to work as I have this option checked at Tools > Internet
Options > Advanced (tab).

The reason is because the new software adds MotiveSB.exe to the list of
running Services (i.e. Processes). This service polls IE for alerts and also
locks the INDEX.DAT file. This is what is preventing my IE cache (or TIF)
from being deleted when I exit IE.

Please forward this to your engineering staff.

Thank you.

Perhaps AVG is locking the INDEX.DAT file as was the case with a program I
just installed - and documented in this thread (today).
