Are Beta versions yet to be tested version ?
The word "beta" is short for the phrase "beta test." In the terminology used
by most software developers, beta testing is one of the phases of testing a
product. Alpha testing, which is done before beta testing, is normally done
in-house, and in beta testing, the product is released to some subset of the
general public to give it much wider exposure and get it tested on a much
larger variety of hardware and software platforms.
So a beta version of a product is an incomplete, unfinished product. It
invariably has known bugs in it, and sometimes these are very serious bugs.
Always remember that if it didn't still have known bugs, beta testing would
be over and the product would be released.
Some people like to run these beta versions, because they want be on the
leading edge of software, and be there with the "latest and greatest."
Unfortunately, unless they are able to run these beta versions on an extra
machine dedicated to testing, they put themselves and all their data at
severe risk. It's always possible that a beta version can trash the entire
contents of your drive.
So my recommendation is to *never* run a beta version of software unless you
can do it on an extra machine where you don't care if you lose *everything*.
