I am not sure if others are experiencing this issue, but: I
have suddenly been victim to a problem using IE. Overnight
and with no installations or updates envoked: IE6 gets a
'DNS/page cannot be found' error on every URL I enter. I
have been able to validate my TCP/IP and internet
connections by getting valid hits on the same URL's when
using Netscape and Mozilla. I have uninstalled IE and
reinstalled it with no success. I have also redone XP Pro
(via the upgrade procedure) and this was also unsuccessful.
I hate to think I have to wipe clean and reinstall from the
bottom up. I hypothesize a file corruption somewhere. Can
anyone tell me where I should be looking? I tried replacing
my winsock and wsock dll's but no luck.

Check your system for "hijackware":

You *must* seek updates for Ad-Aware, Spybot, etc., before each and every
use, even "right out of the box". But even then, they can't catch
everything. When all else fails, HijackThis
(http://www.merijn.org/files/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware. **Post
your files to http://forums.spywareinfo.com/ or the HijackThis Logs forum at
http://forum.aumha.org/ for expert analysis, not here.**

Also update your virus definitions and then run a full system scan. From
now on, do both daily.

[Many anti-spyware sites continue to suffer from a week-long DoS attack.
Alternative download pages for Ad-Aware, Spybot, HijackThis and CWShredder
may be found on this page: http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm.]

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?

I'm not using a modem. I am on a LAN at work. I use a
dedicated T-1 that has no problems and , as I stated, this
problem is only happening with IE. Netscape and Mozilla are
working properly. It IS an IE problem.

Ok, did the checks with Hijackware;it found nothing. I do
not now, nor ever have used Ad-Aware or Spybot. I also do
anti-virus scans 3 times a week and hove since last the
blaster fiasco - also nothing. I am quite stumped.

Hello, just writing to say I am having the same problem. On March 5, 2004 I came into a frozen server with 20 windows opened in my browser.Upon rebooting i to could not use IE6 any more as well my WebSphere application no longer will run applicaitons, having a backup server was a life saver. I downloaded and installed SpyHunter and removed 154 parasites from my server. I tried to get their updated definitions but there application says i don't have an internet connection (must hook into IE some how) and yes i can go anywhere on the net using Netscape

If you find the answer could you email it to me at (e-mail address removed)

Okay...I have tried just about every anti-parasite program
that exists. I have had literally hundreds of 'alleged'
parasite worms removed and still IE is not hitting a damn
thing I try to access. As I stated on my first post:
Netscape and Mozilla are NOT having this problem - only
Internet Explorer. There IS a problem with Internet
Explorer. Will somebody PLEASE figure this very frustrating
problem out. I mean, you guys (Microsoft) made the
program...why can't you fix it?

1. "We" aren't Microsoft.

2. You or another user broke it. Why should MS have to fix it? If you
crash your car, does GM fix it?

One of my clients suffers from a similar problem. That PC is part of a SBS2003 network and since the conversion to the new domain, she gets the "DNS/page cannot be found" error when visiting pages. If she clicks on "Refresh", the page will then display. She can access email fine. Just this annoying error with IE

This seems like a DNS issue but this PC is setup the same as the others on the domain.

Using WinXP Pro with SP1 and IE 6 with latest updates. Daily scans by Norton AC Corp 8.1 and she runs Adaware with updates every week

Any ideas

If she clicks on "Refresh", the page will then display.

This could imply several things, so you should test to try to understand
which ones apply. E.g. if there is a delay in the DNS address resolution
which makes it fail the first time but work the next time, you could try doing
a manual lookup for all the sites involved using nslookup; conversely you
could try doing an ipconfig /flushdns before doing the refresh (or wait
several minutes before doing the refresh) to see if you can make the
refresh fail; etc.

Another possibility is that the page or some of its components are being
cached, in which case the effect of the refresh is to continue from that
point, thus doing a sort of bootstrapping procedure to get the page loaded.
You can test for that by checking to see if anything new is cached before
you press refresh and conversely trying to make it fail by clearing your TIF
before pressing refresh or alternatively by pressing Ctrl-F5. This case
would probably involve scripting (e.g. something to go on under the covers
without involving rendering) so you could include a test for that possibility
by setting your Security settings to Prompt as a kind of breakpoint in that
process.

I think that the best way to diagnose these problems is to capture the
HTTP packet flow. In XP that is possible by using XP's netcap utility
(from the XP Pro Support tools). Since HTTP is so much character-based
you can actually get some idea from the .cap file about what is happening.
Even better though is to format it using tools such as Ethereal or netmon.
