Internet Explorer 6 stops responding

This is the situation that I face not long ago:

I'm a Windows XP Home Edition SP2 user, and I keep my copy of Windows
up-to-date by installing updates issued by Windows Update. I also have an
antivirus software that works in real-time mode.

When I first open Internet Explorer, a blank page displays at Internet
Explorer, as expected (I set my default page to about:blank). However, when I
type in a web address, say www.hotmail.com, and press Enter, a new Internet
Explorer browser window pops up, but soon not long after that, it stops
responding. I tried closing down the program, but it didn't work. I then
pressed Ctrl + Alt + Del to open the Task Manager to end Internet Explorer.
However, I could only close one browser window and the other would remain
active; and the moment after I close one browser window, another opens
automatically and again stops responding. The only way I could close the IE
program is by clicking on the "Processes" tab, right-click the file
iexplore.exe and click on End Process.

Something strange happens after I set Mozilla Firefox as the default browser
(I'm writing this using Mozilla Firefox browser). When I open Internet
Explorer, puts in a web address (say www.hotmail.com) and press Enter, a
Mozilla Firefox window opens and loads Hotmail, whereas the Internet Explorer
window would continue displaying a blank page and "about:blank" at the
Address textbox.

Could anyone please enlighten me on this matter? Does anyone know the
solution to this problem? Any help is much appreciated.

Thank you.

Thanks for the info, but I've run multiple antivirus scans and even scans for
spyware, security vulnerabilities, adware and many more. Still, the result
shows that my computer is clean, free from any form of malware. So, that
should rule out malware infecting Internet Explorer.

Anymore information that could be of better help?
