internet connectivity problems

I'm sure there is a simple fix for this, but at the moment it's
elusive. I have a cable modem worked fine until we had an apparent
power surge due to a storm and I rebooted. Everything came back online
except the internet. So I did the usual unplug the ethernet cable, the
power cord, the coax all to no avail. I can ping my ip address and the
default gateway just fine, but when I try to ping the dhcp server it
times out. When I look at network connections it says that I am
connected to the net. I've renewed the ip address- still no launch.

Any ideas guys?

Thanks,
Tim

i wish i could help, i have an almost identical problem. i thought my
router got zapped during a power surge because my router will not hand
me an ip address, so i took it out of the picture and went straight
form the modem to my computer, i'm now getting an address but the
internet is going sooooo slow its virtually unusable. i can ping out
with some lost packets but most getting a ttl, not sure how to proceed.
i was thinking asbout calling my isp and asking them to run a test on
my modem... any suggestions?

I have been very pleased with comcast service so far and I'm hoping
that things will be back to normal when I get home tonight so until
then I'm trying to pick the brains of a few enlightened folks around
here.

We have been seen many cases like this one. Try to reset the router to factory settings. If this doesn't fix the problem, check if the router has a new firmware. Good luck and keep us update.

Mr Critter

Is your modem running in "transparent" mode? I ask this because I'm
not clear as to what is providing your DHCP and DNS resolution. Is the
modem providing this or is it coming from your provider? Does your
machine have a "public" or "private" IP address? What brand/model of
cable modem? Is it a modem/router?

There are a lot of variables here. Can you give more specific
information?

Hi guys...it turned out to be a Comcast problem at the node. It was
damaged during the storm evidently (my cable tv was fine, but internet
was toast). They had it back up and running by Friday night.

I appreciate the help...I know where to go with my questions from now
on.

Thanks,
Tim
