Internet available but not through IE6 or Firefox

Hi,

I recently did a repair installation of XP Professional on my laptop
(original version, i.e. without SP2). That worked fine but now I want to
download all the updates but when I go to IE6 it says it cannot connect. I
downloaded Firefox on a different computer and installed it on my laptop and
that has the same problem. However, the wireless network card I have in the
PCMCIA slot says it is connected to the internet. I have plugged in for
wired broadband but that only connects to the network and not the internet.

I have been through everything and compared it to another laptop that is
wired into the router and the setting all seem similar (bearing in mind the
other laptop has SP3).

Please help me as it is driving me nuts after sitting there for a day trying
to sort it!

Thanks in advance.
Ben

Hi Jack,

Thanks for your message. A couple of things:

1) Having reinstalled XP, would these settings not have been reset
2) The instructions were a bit advanced for me and im not sure exactly what
I should have been doing.
3) When I have been going through the Internet Options and comparing it to
another computer which is working, I have had Error 711 appear a few times
and say something about not being able to load the Remote Access Connection
Manager and that a configuration error is preventing the connection.

I hope something above makes sense and you will be able to suggest something
else to try?

Many thanks,
Ben

Have a firewall? Is it configured to allow your browsers? Did you give
Windows Firewall permission for your browsers?

Hi,

I cannot access my firewall, it comes up with the same warning about the
Remote Access Connection Manager and something about Internet Connection
Sharing has an error.

It seems like either something is missing or it is getting confused between
having SP2 before and not having it now. If I download SP3 on a different
computer and install it on the one which is not working, do you think it
would help? Also, I could try and download IE7 and install that, would that
help also?

Thanks for your response, looking forward to the next suggestion!
Regards to all,
Ben
