i am using win xp and linksys wireless adapter. for an
unknown reason, i am unable to access the internet.
extended discussions with linksys were unsuccessful and i
was finally advised to uninstall SP1 for windows xp and
install SP1A. I have two problems

1. i do not know how to uninstall SP1

2. can i download SP1A to the desktop of the computer i
am using to send this request for help, burn it to a CD,
and then install it on the wireless computer.

any help would be greatly appreciated. thank you,
workdrone

SP1 and SP1-A are one and the same, with the exception that SP1-A doesn't
contain the MS Java Virtual Machine.

Had the same problem but only with my other computer. The main computer was
okay but my husband could not get on the internet & we are networked
together. After 4 calls to "Linksys" their tech support, which was coming
from India & Manila, were no help & they told me to uninstall everything on
his machine & re-install. But couldn't see that would be it. I had a man
from the local computer business come here & he checked everything on my
machine, same thing with the other one....no access. He re-entered both the
user name & password & bingo!!!! Somehow something had changed them. Just
worth a try. Hope it helps because that company sure doesn't :o) To get to
do that, you have to double click on the icon on the second computer

I had a similar problem with another main brand reuter, spent several hours
trying, in the end gave up for that day.
Tried again the following day, started sys, everything worked immediately
!!??

I'm running a Linksys router with wireless connections over a cable modem.
Open DOS prompt (Start->Run...->Type "cmd". Do the following and let me know
what happens:
1. Type "ping 192.168.1.1"
2. Type "ping www.google.com"
3. Type "ipconfig"

i did this with the linksys reprensentative. did it again
got same answer on both. req timed out (4x) for 1&2;
IPADDRESS 192.168.1.102 for 3. it was the linksys repr.
that told me to remove SP1 and replace with SP1A.
anything else? thx. harry

OK. I assume you have a linksys wireless router. Are you able to connect a
computer directly to the router.
1. Connect a computer via ethernet cable to the router.
2. Open an IE browser and type in 192.168.1.1
a. Log into router. default user: <blank> password: linksys
b. Configure the router as follows:

Setup
Internet Connection type = DHCP.
Operating mode = Infrastructure or gateway.

Wireless
Wireless Network Mode = Mixed
Wireless Network Name (SSID) = <your network name>
Wireless Channel = 1, 6, or 11 are the strongest channels
Wireless SSID broadcast = Enable

Security
Make sure to change your router password.

3. Disconnect your line between the router and the computer. Make sure your
wireless card is in place.

4. From the start menu, select “My Computerâ€. On the left, under “Other
places†select “My Network placesâ€. On the left, under “View network
connectionsâ€. This will bring up a window with all your available
connections.

a. If you see “Wireless Network Connectionâ€. Right click on it and
select Properties. This will bring up “Wireless Network Connection
Propertiesâ€. Click on “Wireless Networks†tab. You should see a
list of all your available and preferred networks.

i. Select your wireless network under available networks and
click on configure. In “Wireless Network Propertiesâ€, make
sure network authentication is Shared. Data encryption is
WEP. Unselect “This key is provided for me automaticallyâ€.
Network Key should be set to the network key you generated
earlier. Make sure the key index is set to the index you
chose
in generating your network key. Under the authentication
tab,
make sure “Enable IEEE 802.1x auth….†is disabled.

ii. If you are seeing more than one network, set up your
preferred
network the same way it is set up above

b. If you do not see “Wireless Network connectionâ€.
i. If this is a desktop, power down the computer and make sure
wireless card is in place. Power the computer back up. Go to
#c

ii. If this is a laptop and the wireless card did not come
preinstalled,
power down the computer and remove the wireless card from
the
PCMCIA slot. Power the computer back up. Upon Windows being
loaded, put wireless card in PCMCIA slot. Windows should
recognize
the hardware if it was previously installed. Otherwise, go
through
any wizards that might come up.

iii. To view recognized hardware, go to Control Panel from
Start Menu.
Select “Performance and Maintenanceâ€. Click on “Systemâ€
and then
select “Hardware†tab. Click on “Device Managerâ€. Make
sure “Network Adaptors†is expanded. You should see your
wireless
hardware here.

c. If you didn't get prompted to set up your wireless network and
“Wireless Network connection†is not in the Network Connections,
go to Control Panel->Network & Internet...->Set up a wireless...
and follow the wizard using the same parameters you entered
into the router.

5. Open DOS prompt (Start->Run...->Type "cmd". Do the following and let me
know what happens:
a. Type "ping 192.168.1.1"
b. Type "ping www.google.com"
c. Type "ipconfig /release", then "ipconfig /renew"

Skip over steps 4i and 4ii. These are partial instructions for setting up
WEP, but lets get you talking to the router first.
