does Win XP SP2 require SP1?

I

iainc

I'm trying to upgrade a machine to SP3. It is only used online occasionally
and the owner doesn't have broadband, so it doesn't have any service packs!

I actually bought him an SP3 disk to use, but then we discover that SP3 will
only install on top of SP2 or SP1a. Pity it didn't mention that at the point
where you order it :(.

I can download and hand-deliver SP2. Will we be able to install that? Or
will we find we need to install SP1 and/or SP1a first?

I can find an SP1a download, but it is tiny, so I guess it is only
incremental from SP1. If we need SP1 first, does anyone know a reliable
source? MS don't seem to offer a download of SP1 any longer?

Thanks for any help.

- SP1/1a only requires Windows XP RTM (Released to Manufacturing - no
Service Packs.)
- SP2 only requires Windows XP RTM (Released to Manufacturing - no Service
Packs.)
- SP3 requires at least SP1(a) or above already be installed *unless* you
integrate it into the Windows XP installatrion media - in which case the CD
could be RTM (Released to Manufacturing - no Service Packs.)

All of the service packs (except 1, it was completely replaced with 1a for
'legal reasons') are available for download.

Windows XP SP1a for IT Professionals (it works for anyone really)

Windows XP SP2 for IT Professionals (it works for anyone really)

Windows XP SP3 for IT Professionals (it works for anyone really)

My suggestion...

- Download SP1a and SP2 and put them on some portable media.
- Install SP2 on the machine first. SP1a is just in case SP2 gives you any
trouble - it shouldn't.
- Install SP3.
- Visit the http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ web page - do a custom scan,
get a list of KB###### that is needed (high-priority) and grab them with
your broadband onto portable media for installation another time (or you can
download them - but over dial-up - ouch.)

Some things you should know... (Applies to SP2 as well.)

1) Download the full SP3 installation file and/or burn the ISO
download to CD.
2) Ensure (as well as plausible) you have no spyware/malware by
doing a full scan with SuperAntiSpyware and MalwareBytes.
3) CHKDSK
4) Defragment
5) Ensure your hardware drivers are up to date (from the hardware
manufacturer's respective web pages.)
6) Reboot right before you try to install SP3.
7) Disconnect from the internet before installing (physically.)
8) Disable your antivirus and antispyware applications when you are
about to install SP3.

Hope that helps!

Shenan has given you all you need to know. I would just mention that
Microsoft issued many SP2 update CDs in 2004 for free.
Many users like me still have theses CDs. You may be able to borrow one from
your circle of friends. They make updating a much easier and quicker task.
