Intermitant problem network connection problem

Hi I run a small network and ICS over a broadband connection. The host is a
desktop and two notebooks are connect (1 via wireless and one via cable). The
Adsl modem is connected via USB. Normally everything works fine but over th
last 2 weeks one or both notebooks cannot seem to get and IP addrss from the
host so automatically allocate themselves an address starting with 169.
xxx.x.x

After a long while connection is established with no apparent reason. This
is costing me a lot of time and I cannot find anything on the Knowledge base
to cover it. The network and ICS normally runs fine but this is getting more
frequent.

Any suggestions PLEASE !

How are the two notebooks connecting to the desktop? Is this a 3 way Adhoc
connection, or do you have a WiFi hub between the 3 computers?

Is this just a problem with getting an IP address, or with ICS? When one
notebook can't get an address, is the other still able to use ICS? Can the
wireless notebook get online even when the wired notebook can't get an address?

When the problem comes up, how do you work around it?

Hi Chuck

The computers are connected as follows :

Gateway machine connected by therenet cable to an ehternet hub
Laptop 1 via cable to the ethernet hub
laptop 2 via a wirless accessport connected to the hub

Currently laptop 2 is the problem but I have had the issues with laptop 1
also. I have also tried connecting laptop 2 via cable intothe hub - still
same problem. When I have had the problem in the past it has cleared itself
after a couple of hours - this time it hasn't. It looks like the gateway
machine is not assigning and address but why I do not know !

Let me know if you ned more information.

Hi Chuck

they are all connected as follows

Latop 2 wireless via a wireless acces point connected to Hub

The problem is with laptop 2 this time but both machines have done this. I
have tried connecting laptop 2 via cable to hub but same problem. In the past
the problem seem to clear itself afte an hour or so, this time it hasn't !!

Let's do some examination of your LAN. Get SoftPerfect Network Scanner (free)
from <http://www.softperfect.com/products/networkscanner/>. When the problem is
active, do a scan of the 192.168.0.1 subnet, and see what addresses it finds.

Do you see any errors in the desktop Event Viewer?
