Intellipoint Optical Mouse & Windows Explorer

I have a MS IntelliPoint Optical mouse 4.0 and it has developed a very
irritating quirk; I have uninstalled and re-installed it to no avail.

Previously:

When WE was not in the Folders view, I could click on a folder icon and
it would open a new window and show contents.

When Windows Explorer was open in the Folders view and I clicked on a
folder in the right window, it would open and show contents.

Now:

When not in the Folders view and I click on an icon, a Command Prompt
window opens.

When in a Folders view and I click on a colder in th4e right window, a
Command Prompt opens.

What can I do to get the mouse behavior back to normal. I detest only being
able working in the left window.

Hi Old Codger

This sometimes happens if you have set Windows for "Single-click to open
an item (point to select)" in Explorer's Tools > Folder Options >
General. If that's not the case with you, don't blame your poor mouse!

If you are happy with editing the Registry, try this: open Regedit and
navigate to:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell

In the right pane, look at the value Default. It should be set to "none"
(without the quotes). If it isn't, double-click on Default and in the
Edit String box that pops up, type none. Click OK and close Regedit.

If you don't like to get your hands dirty in the Registry :-), MVP Kelly
has an automated fix that will do it for you. Go to:

Read the top of the page for instructions on how to use the .reg file.
Don't be put off by the fact that it talks about Search opening -- the
same problem can cause the Command prompt you're seeing, as this
Knowledge Base article explains:

Go to Start / Run and type regsvr32 /i shell32 and press OK.

Try the folder file open again.
