Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service

Hi,

PROBLEM
--------------

Terminal server users had the following problem when logging on this
morning. After entering user + pass they get a message. When I login as
administrator I also get the following message:

"Windows cannot load your profile. Please increase the registry size and
restart your computer"

When selecting OK I then get:

"Windows Cannot Load the Users Profile But Has Logged You On with the
Default Profile for the System. DETAIL. Insufficient system resources exist
to complete the requested service"

SOLUTIONS ATTEMPTED
---------------------------------------

1. The current registry size is 141MB according to the field under My
Computer Properties. I increased maximum registry size to 1GB and restarted
the machine and still had the problem. When exporting registry via REGEDIT
the file totalled 192MB. When checking the max size again it said it was 1GB
(i.e changes look like the applied ok).

2. this article did not help
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;246936). i.e I
deleted a user profile and attempted to login again without success.

3. in the process of looking at this article
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;246936
when attempting to create a new user i get the message

"The following error occurred while attempting to create the user TEST on
computer SERVER. Insufficient system resources exist to complete the
requested service.

Can anyone offer a suggestions ?

It looks like the registry cannot be updated even although the maximum size
has been increased.

Thanks for your time.

after a restart i now noticed a message in event log:

EVENT ID 12288 (SAM)

"SAM faield to write changes to database. This is most likly due to a memory
or disk space shortage. The SAM database will be restored to an earlier
state. Recent changes will be lost. Check that disk space is avaialble and
maximum page size."

Page size was at 2GB already (20Gb disk with 13GB left). I also set 2Gb on a
second local drive and restarted. Still have the same problem.

I spoke too soon. The article suggests:

- FREE UP DISK SPACE (well i have 13GB on C and windows report is does not
need defragmented !)
- Increase registry size (Its 900MB !!)
- Increase Page File (Its 2GB per drive !!!)

Can anyone help ?

it also suggsted deleting NETLOGON.CHG on the DC. But the problem does not
occur on the DC and i cant find a NETLOGON.CHG on the server with the
problem.

just as a test I tried a right click in c:\winnt\ to create a file and it
froze. I opened a cmd prompt and created a txt file using EDIT but this
worked ok. I noticed that permissions on WINNT for everyone were blank.
changed to allow everyone access (recursively through C) and restarted.
Still have "insufficent system..." msg at logon though.

After restarted i can right click and select NEW but many of the options are
not available (i.e new text file). I think this is profile related (i.e can
setup per user) so this may explain this problem.

Trying check disk on restarted.

I cant load INTERNET EXPLORER even with admin rights as it claims i dont
have priviges.

when reseting permissions on c it stopped on PAGEFILE.SYS claiming it could
not read it. When loading a command prompt and searching for c:\pagefile.sys
it was not there.

I guess the problems could all be about the PAGEFILE.

My DIR is set to show hidden files but i cant see pagefile.sys or find it
using DIR Is this normal ? (domain controller appears to be the same).

The following registry entry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory
Management

shows the following key:

PagingFiles c:\pagefile.sys 3000 4095 d:\pagefile.sys 1000 2000

When right clicking the c drive and attempting to create a new text file the
system tends to freeze/run very slowly. When attempting to save the file as
PageFile.sys it claims a file allready exists - which is fine.

So i using MY COMP, Propertires etc to change page file to ZERO on C and
restarted. Created a PAGEFILE.SYS which worked this time as no existed. Set
permissions on C to allow SYSTEM, ADMIN , EVERYONE access to everything on
C. SET page file on D to ZERO, created PAGE FILE on C starting at 2GB max of
3GB and was prompted to overwrite the existing page file (selected YES) and
restared. Still had problem. Im guessing its not the pagefile that has the
problem then.

I think login as local admin (as opposed to domain) and deleting all
profiles in "c:\docs and settings" may have done it (apart from all users
and local admin profiles as it would not let me.

thanks for your help : )
