Insufficient memory

Windows XP, all item as far as I know are current (live-update).
Two weeks ago a website asked for the latest Java-machine, which I
installed. Since than, after some activity I get an 'insufficient-memory'
problem. Deleted the Java-machine, but no change. It seems to me as if the
swap-memory-file is not getting cleared. Only rebooting as giving me space
again, but rebooting every two hours (depends on what I do) is not my
favourite waste of time.

Adjusting the size of the swap-memory didn't make a difference.

Who knows what's wrong?

(System is delivered with a recovery-disk, from 2003, reinstalling Windows
cannot be a save option.)

A low virtual memory message means the amount of RAM in your computer is
insufficient for the tasks it is being asked to perform. (The correct
setting for virtual memory is "system managed size.") Likely causes are:

1- Malware (the most likely cause.) Solution: Remove malware.

2- Too many memory-intensive applications running in the background.
Solution: Examine the applications running in the background and
consider whether they are all necessary.

3- Amount of installed RAM no longer sufficient. Solution: Use the RAM
selectors on the web pages of the major manufacturers (e.g. Crucial) to
select additional RAM designed for your exact make and model of computer.
