Installing xp

Marty

I replaced the hard drive per best buy in my pc, its a Dell, I keep getting a
hit f1 to reboot or f2 to setup. The hd instructions said I would not need a
jumper and when I go to setup to boot options the hd is recognized but I cant
get past the hit f1 or f2 screen. I put my xp media disk in and nothing then
I tried my xp home and nothing. I tried all the jumper settings and
nothing..the same error screen. I went to f12 and tried to boot off the disk
and cdrom and all options and same. I think it might be the mother board?
Its a backup computer for the kids so Im just trying to learn at the same
time as fixing it. Any advice on the install? Thanks
Marty

Sounds like you're not setting the CD to boot first in the BIOS or set
up. Hit F2 to get into set up, aka BIOS, and then look for a boot order
and change it to boot from the CDROM first. Hit F-10 to save and exit
and XP will start to install. If that works and XP starts to install, at
one point it will reboot and you will see "hit any key to boot from the
CD". DON'T hit any key or you will start the installation from the
beginning again.

The hard drive instructions may well tell you that there is no jumper if the
drive is used as a slave, BUT..

If your primary drive is jumpered for Cable Select, the second drive will
also need the jumper set for Cable Select..

Marty:
You've got to provide a bit more detail re your system & the situation...

What is the make & model of the Dell computer?

Tell us a bit about the HDD...is it a PATA or SATA HDD? What's its make?

Tell us *precisely* how you connected the HDD in the system. I assume it's
the *only* HDD in the system and you're intending to install XP onto it? Is
that right? Or is this HDD designed to be a *secondary* HDD that will be
used for backups/storage or other purposes?

What makes you think whatever problem you're experiencing is due to the
motherboard? Have there been previous problems with the system? Is that why
you replaced the HDD? If there were previous problems, describe them.

The hd is a sata western digital, the Dell is a Dimension 4600 with XP and a
Pentium 4. My son did something that I cant find out to the original setup
and I could only get the computer to start up in the black screen with the
safemode etc options and it would not start in those options so Best or Worst
buy said it was the hard drive. I believe I did try to boot from the cd and
no luck but I will try again (per previous persons advice) and thanks for
the help, I really love to learn about this stuff and appreciate all of your
help.

You will have to go into BIOS (press F2 as soon as you see the instruction
appear on screen) and then root around for anything which will let you
enable SATA recognition..
