installing XP over pirated version

I have recently found out that the version of XP on my
computer is pirated. (authorities have been notified)

I have purchased a legitamate version and want to install
it. The clerck told me that it may re-write my whole hard
drive and I could lose everything.

How do I install XP without messing up my whole system.

run the install from the xp cd. During this process it will ask what kind of
file system you want and stuff like that. If you choose to "Leave Current
File System Intact" you should be fine.
Naturally you should always make backups just to be safe.
