Installing XP on large drives

Guest

I am going to buy a new PC and want to transfer my current licensed copy of
XP Pro to my new PC. It is an original version w/o SP2. My PC builder says
that I cannot install this version on a larger drove. My new PC will have a
250 mb SATA drive.

Is this the case or is there a workaround?

Secondly, if this IS the case, I will need to pay an additonal $170 for a
copy of XP Pro installed on the new PC. The new PC will have an Intel dual
core MB and Vista ready. Should I just go ahead and buy the machine with
Vista installed for $189 instead. I would rather wait on Vista until after
at least the first Service Pack is released. I will be networking with two
other XP PRo PC's.

Your thoughts and advice is sincerely appreciated.

Many thanks,

WF

Find another PC builder, quick. Your original Windows XP CD will install on
any drive that is large enough and that is supported by the motherboard, 750
GByte hard drives included. I would suspicious of the reason behind the PC
builder's misinformation - to the point of wondering if the Vista
installation being pushed is counterfeit.

What he probably means is that Winxp, pre sp1, will not recognise a large hd
and as a result will only create a single partition of 137gb - allthough
once installed & updated you can then Partition the remaining free space.

To workaround this you create a slipstreamed winxp cd containing the latest
sp.
You may need also to use F6 option to install sata/raid drivers even if you
are not using raid. You need to read mobo manual on this as it varies

If the XP CD includes SP1 you are ok.

I recently installed Windows XP Pro SP2 on a 232.88 GB/250 GB drive with an
Intel SATA RAID Controller.

"Windows XP SP1 includes 48-bit LBA support for ATAPI disk drives. With this
support, you can use hard disks that are larger than the current 137 GB
limit. By default, support is enabled in SP1."

"By default, the original release version of Windows XP Home Edition and of
Windows XP Professional do not have 48-bit LBA support."

How to enable 48-bit Logical Block Addressing support for ATAPI disk drives

You still probably need drivers on a 3 1/2 floppy from the drive or
controller manufacturer to use with F6 during setup.

Limited OEM driver support is available with F6 during Windows XP and
Windows Server 2003 setup

That's correct!

Just google for instructions for creating a slipstreamed CD

As others have said, this is easily overcome by creating a new XP
Installation CD with SP2 slipstreamed into it.

However if your current Windows XP is an OEM version then that license
is permanently locked to the first computer that it is installed on
and cannot be legitimately transferred to another computer under any
circumstances.

To check if your current Windows XP is an OEM version open Control
Panel - System (General tab) and look at the 20 character product i.d.
code that is shown as the last line in the "Licensed to" section. If
the second segment of the product i.d. code reads OEM then you have an
OEM version of Windows XP. If it is a numeric value then you have a
retail (or volume license) version.

Good luck

Sincere thanks to all who responded.

My MP copy in not an OEM copy and I believe it has SP 1 included. I have SP
2 on a CD ROM disc.

So, what I think I hear you all saying is that I may be okay. Give it a
whirl. Thee MAY be MOMO limitations and to chec for workarounds there. Now,
that you say that, that may be what the builder was driving at. Sometimes we
hear what we want to or only absorb what we can. I have confidence in the
builder. I don't think that's a problem. Been buying from him for about 8
years.

I will investigate slipstreaming, as well.

Thanks again to all,

WF
