windows xp pro sp2 'new'

Marcy

Hi, I have come across someone selling in the newspaper locally, a brand new
sealed Reinstall disk for Compaq or HP Windows xp pro sp2. I havent seen it
yet but am hoping that its the Windows OS xp pro sp2 version genuine license
(you know.....the ones that you can buy in office stores that are a couple
of hundred bucks)
If I buy a used pc (which is what I was looking for to begin with)
will/should I uninstall the xp version on the 'used' pc and BUY this sealed
xp pro and install it on the 'used' pc.........thus, will be my new OS in my
name and genuine legal license?? Is that how it works?
Soes the operating system mean the same thing as " xp pro version" is??
thank you in advance

A reinstall disk for a Compaq or HP computer? It's an OEM disk that must be
used on a compatible Compaq or HP computer.

That will only install on a Compaq/HP computer. Your least expensive
option is to buy a "generic" OEM version or to buy an upgrade version.
So long as you have a cd of a previous qualifying Windows version you
will be able to install the upgrade version, and you will be able to
install it cleanly. Why the more expensive Pro version? Do you want to
join the machine to a domain? If not, what special features do you
require that are available on the Pro version but not the Home version?

So, if i buy an HP or Compaq pc, then this will be fine to install on it.
SHould I assume that this person is selling the disc that was never
opened.....because he proably doesnt have the pc that belongs to this xp pro
disk so he wants to make $$$ by selling the disk itself?
I have 2 xp pcs with home so if this person is selling the PRO version, it
is becuase that is what he has for sale.
What is a generic version OEm version?

You need the installation CD *and* the Product ID or Key number. It
should install but there is no guarantee that the cd will install on any
or all Compaq/HP computer, it depends on how old the computer is and on
the model of the motherboard and the BIOS version. If you buy a second
hand computer ask the seller to give you the disks and product key that
came with the machine, that way you will be sure. (The product key
should be on a sticker affixed to the pc)

I emailed the seller questions and this is what he replyed about the cd, "
It is in a white cd paper envelope it doesn't have a licence . you need to
have windows xp pro already installed and just need to reinstall""
So i guess i can not use this cd if i buy an xp version. thanks for all your
tips any more are always welcome.

It is worthless to you. It is nothing but an expensive coaster.

And will will work *ONLY* on the spoecific model computer for which it
was designed.

Not legal.
Is that how it works?

No, it won't work at all.

Only if it's the right specific model.

SHould I assume that this person is selling the disc that was never
opened.....because he proably doesnt have the pc that belongs to this xp pro

No, you should assume that the person selling the disk is either
woefuully ignorant or dishonest and trying to run a scam. Either way,
this is no one you should give money to.
