Installing XP Home

My Compaq Presario has both Windows 98se and Windows 2000
Professional installed. I use primarily win 98 OS and all
my applications are installed and run in 98. Win 2000
didn't have all the drivers and some of my apps and HW
elements didn't run properly so I never fully used 2000.
I'd like to get rid of both 98 and 2000 and replace both
with XP Home edition upgrade. The uprgade is compatible
with 98SE but not 2000 pro. Do I have to delete 2000 pro
for the upgrade to work or can I install XP home over both
and run with one OS. This dual OS has been a problem from
the start!

It would be best if you performed a "clean install" of Windows XP:

The Windows XP CD is bootable and contains all the tools necessary
to partition and format your drive. Follow this procedure and allow
Windows XP to partition and format your drive:

NOTE: It would be best to physically disconnect all your peripheral hardware
devices, except the monitor, mouse and keyboard, before installing XP.

NOTE: If you have an internal Zip Drive installed, physically disconnect the
EIDE and power cable to it before proceeding, otherwise your main
hard drive may not be assigned the customary C: drive letter.
After installing Windows XP, you may then reconnect it.

1. Open your BIOS and set your "CD Drive as the first bootable device".

2. Insert your Windows XP CD in the CD Drive and reboot your computer.
3. You'll see a message to boot to the CD....follow the instructions.
4. The setup menu will appear and you should elect to delete all the existing
Windows partitions, then create a new partition, then format the primary
partition (preferably NTFS) and proceed to install Windows XP.

6. ==> Immediately after installing Windows XP, turn on XP's Firewall.

7. After Windows XP is installed, visit the Windows Update website
and download the available "Critical Updates".

8. After installing the critical updates, be sure and visit the support website
of the manufacturer of the computer to download and install any
available Windows XP compatible drivers, such as video adapter
and audio drivers.

The XP cd has all the tools to do a complete install, you will need to
disconnect all peripherals except monitor, mouse & keyboard then boot from
the XP cd and it will walk you through the steps to delete all the
partitions on all drives. With the upgrade cd this is all possible but at
one point during the download you will be asked to put in a qualifying copy
of windows for proof of ownership of a previous version the 98 cd will work
(restore disks will not work).

After finishing installing OS enable the firewall

Then visit MS Windows update site and download all the critical updates,

If you could not get the proper device drivers to use Win2K on
that specific model PC, you have even less chance of getting WinXP to
work.
