2000 pro to XP upgrade results in frustration

I have an existing Windows 2000 Pro OEM
installation on a P4 1.8, 512MB pc. I've installed a
new mainboard, upgraded P4 to 2.8 and upgraded RAM to 1GB
in an effort to upgrade 2000 Pro to XP Pro. The XP Pro cd
is an OEM. The issue is that I'm receiving a dialog that
reads as follows "Windows XP setup does not support
upgrading from Windows 2000 Professional to Windows XP
Professional. Click OK."

I remember in the old days of 95 and 98 you had to rename
some files on the drive to upgrade to 98SE. Win 2000 Pro
OEM supported upgrades from Win 98/SE. Knowledge base
searching resulted in suggesting that the 2000 Pro install
was from an evaluation copy. This is not possible since
it was installed from an OEM.

How can I get my task accomplished? Does anyone have any
Suggestions?

OEM versions of Windows XP are not designed to upgrade
over an existing Windows installation. It must be installed
"clean" on a reformatted drive.

In order to upgrade Windows 2000 to Windows XP Pro,
you'll need to purchase the "retail, upgrade version" of
Windows XP Pro.

If you stick with the OEM version, you will have to save all your data and
settings to a location the fresh install won't mess with (like a backup cd)
and reinstall all your software after installing XP.

Your best option is probably backing up all your data/documents (maybe via
the Wizard), installing your oem XP cd clean, then restoring the data and
documents.
