When I purchased my computer from a local PC builder he gave me an invalid
copy of windows xp pro. I now have a valid CD of windows xp home edition .
How can I load this without losing any of my other programs or files?

You are downgrading. You cannot put XP Home over XP Pro. To a complete clean reformat and then install XP Home

I'm afraid you can't. The only way to change from WinXP Pro to
WinXP Home is to format the drive and start over. There is no supported
downgrade path or technique. Had you purchased a copy of WinXP Pro,
you'd have been able to perform a repair installation, preserving your
applications and settings.

Simply boot from the WinXP Home installation CD. You'll be
offered the opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as
part of the installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the
order of boot devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)

Just do a Repair Installation. This way you do not lose any data etc. Just
in case - Backup any important data.

A WinXP Home CD *cannot* perform a repair of WinXP Pro.

Hi,

You could install Windows Xp Home edition in parallel ; for example in
c:\windows 2.

When you boot Pc you will have the option to choose start from Windows xp
professional or Windows XP home edition.
Espero que esta informacion sea util

I think the other poster missed that you have XP Pro installed and want to
load the legit copy of XP Home.
