installing "remote boot setup" during eval install

J

John F. Davis

Hello

Today, i started installing the xp eval kit on a windows
2000 workstation. I have been running the installer in
steps. I even rebooted after I installed the database.
Now, I am at step 5. Setup the Remote Boot server but when
try to install it, it says loosely, "Installation package
cannot be opened...verify that you have a proper image".

I downloaded the image from the MS website and when it
finised installing, it pulled down two folder
named "disk1" and "disk2". I tried running the setup in
both folders and they both say the same thing when I try
to select insall boot server.

Please help.

I had exactly the same problem (October 25th 2003 5:40PM,
see my message.)
No one here seems to have an answer though, neither does
the knowledge base so I just went and ordered it on cd
from the USA.. at international post and packing costs. :-
(

I'd be very grateful if anyone had an answer, I'm sure JD
would as well.

Hello

I have also submitted a question to MS tech support.
Since this is a eval version, they say they do not support
the product. But, I also see unlimited free support for
product installs. I consider this an install problem so I
am trying to push the issue from that perspective.
I'll let you know what I find out.

FWIW, I was able to use the rest of the tool to build a
image, so I would consider the install images to be
reasonbly ok.

Ohh, i see. Too bad if I'm a potential customer
developing an XPe based product then. This solution
obviously dosn't work so I'll have to look at other
companies. Perhaps Bootix will provide the solution I'm
looking for.

The Remote Boot must be installed on a Windows 2000 server, or the Remote
Boot QFE must be installed ona Windows 2003 server. Both Win 2000/2003
servers have DHCP support required to support Remote Boot.

Hi Sean,

Could you just clarify on what QFE means please. I don't
recall seeing that anywhere.

Also, I can't speak for John but I'm attempting to
install the Remote Boot Service on Windows 2000 Advanced
Server SP4. I don't have 2003 Server so I can't try it
there but the documentation says things should work fine
on 2000.
Is the DHCP server a pre-requisit of Remote Boot Service
or can it be installed afterwards?
The error message we are both getting seems to be more
low level than pre-requisits.

We are currently investigating this. We were able to reproduce this error
and we will be working on getting a fix as soon as possible.

I will keep you updated.

Lawrence,

The Remote Boot Server that comes with XPe is for Win2000 Server. MS
published an update (QFE) for Windows 2003 Server:

Remote Boot Server update for Windows 2003 Server (Q820683), May 19, 2003
This update allows you to run Remote Boot Server on Windows 2003 Server
machines.

I have test Remote Boot Server (RBS) running on both Server OSes without a
problem. I am not sure of the order of installation has any issues, but I do
know that I had DHCP installed before I installed RBS. That way I can follow
the installation instructions in order, and add the Port 60 support, etc.

Hello

The solution was that MS support had to mail me the
missing file. Somehow the setup program on the MS site
was missing the NBS folder. The NBS folder they sent me
contains a file called WINDOWS XP EMBEDDED REMOTE BOOT
SERVER.MSI.
