Hi,

Do you have the Win98 CD, and is it a retail version?

If you have the retail version of Win98 then use the following instructions
to install XP. You will be prompted to insert the Win98 disk to satisfy the
compliance check.
XP Clean Install

If the Win98 CD is an OEM version, install it first. Boot into Win98, insert
the XP CD and run setup.

Then if your copy of XP is an UPGRADE version only, you have two choices.
The more expensive choice is to exchange your upgrade version for a full
version and pay the difference. the other (cheaper) option is to buy
another copy of Windows 98 on EBay.

If your copy is a FULL copy, then set your computer at power-up to boot
directly from the CD. If your BIOS will not allow that, then it's highly
probable that your machine is too old and obsolescent to run XP anyway....

Simply boot from the WinXP installation CD. You'll be offered the
opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part of the
installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the order of boot
devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)

Have you verified that all of your PC's hardware components are
capable of supporting WinXP? This information will be found at the PC's
manufacturer's web site, and on Microsoft's Windows Catalog:

You should also take a few minutes to ensure that there are
WinXP-specific device drivers available for all of the machine's
components. There may not be, if the PC was specifically designed for
Win98/Me. Also bear in mind that PCs designed for, sold and run fine
with Win9x/Me very often do not meet WinXP's much more stringent
hardware quality requirements. This is particularly true of many early
models in Compaq's consumer-class Presario product line or HP's
consumer-class Pavilion product line. WinXP, like WinNT and Win2K
before it, is quite sensitive to borderline defective or substandard
hardware (particularly motherboards, RAM and hard drives) that will
still support Win9x.

No, the fact that Windows 98 was removed is irrelevant, and you should not
be at a DOS prompt and do not enter any DOS commands.

Just boot from the Windows XP CD (change the BIOS boot order if necessary to
accomplish this) and follow the prompts for a clean installation (delete the
existing partition by pressing "D" when prompted, then create a new one).

If your copy of Windows XP is an Upgrade one, you will be asked to insert
the CD of a previous qualifying version as proof of ownership. Just insert
the Windows 98 CD at the prompt.
