installing joystick

I just got flight simulator 2004 and I've been trying to get my old joystick microsoft sidewinder presicion pro to work in my new computer. I went out and got me an adaptor that goes from midi to usb, since my new computer does not have a midi plug. When I tried to install the drivers forthe joystick, I got a message that the drivers are not compatible with windows xp. I also tried using the add new hardware fromm the control panel in that instance the message was that my gameport or gameport drivers are not properly configured to look at the device manager. I look but I dont know how to correct the problem. If anybody got any suggestions please reply to this message. Any advice will be of great help.

You my friend have joined the club of people as did I who
have been hosed by microsoft! The drivers for the
sidewinder are not compatable with XP,Oh M/S claims that
the drivers are already installed with XP and it does
have a limited use but many games will no longer work
with the sidewinder. What do they care? they already have
are $$$$$$.
