Installing HP Tape crive not recognized

I have a 2000 server, SP4, 512Mb RAM. I have had issues
with a tape drive that I have had to swap out three times
recently, mostly due to Veritas drivers. Now the system
will not recognize the tape drive consistently. The scsi
cards check out fine as does the cable and power.
Another issue that makes troubleshooting even worse, the
system log is not recording either.

Are you running the most recent build of Veritas Backup Exec? I've
seen this problem a lot with certain sizes of DLT drives. Downloading
the installing the latest build sometimes helps.

I'm using 8.6, I know 9.1 is out. I'll look into it too.

You didn't say what size DLT drive you're using. I've had similar
problems with HP/Compaq 35/70 DLT drives. Some things you could try:-

1. Download and install the latest build of Back Exec 8.6 - there are
a number of different builds and each seems to address issues with
different devices.

2. Download the latest Veritas tape drivers and make sure they're
being used rather than the Microsoft/HP drivers.

3. Remove Backup Exec and the Veritas tape drivers and install the
latest HPtape driver from HP. See if it works with NTBACKUP before
reinstalling Backup Exec and when you do put it back try it with the
HP driver before loading Veritas drivers.

4. Download the HP diagnostics tool and see if will recognise and run
tests on the drive.
