Installing 2nd Sata Drive

G

Guest

I am using Windows XP Home Edition (with SP1, SP2 and all updates). The
operating system was booting of a Maxtor 160Gb HD, needing more storage I
have connected a second SATA drive (250 Gb) onto the motherboard. The bios
recognises it, as does windows Device manager which says the driver is
working properly, however it is not showign up as another drive and hence
carn't be used.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Have you looked under Control Panel/Admin.Tools/Computer management/disk
management
It should be listed there it might be listed as "offline"........right
click and click connect/online
it might also be listed as unallocated
space and therefore needs to be "formatted"

Moved forward somewhat, in that it was shown as unallocated, so I selected to
initialise it, wherapon it produced an error and said the disk was
unreadable. Prefumably I need to format it, how do you go about that ? (I
used to format and install operating system quite hapily with DOS but XP is
more complicated).

Thanks

In the same section by right clicking the drive there should show an option
to format

I'm afraid right clicking only gives initialise, properties and help.
Initialising produces an error message which when I checked in the event log
gave an error

The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk1\D.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

(Microsofts website only said that it was an unknown error).

Any further ideas? (personally I always liked the dos prompt).

Thanks
