Installing 250GB SATA on New motherboard using XP-SP1 install shows only 130GB - This a a FAQ but -

This question pops up time and again. The KB shows that original versions
of XP didn't have LBA enabled and once you enable LBA all is well.

However, I'm using a XP-SP1 install CD and I'm only showing 131MB of 250GB
brand new MAXTOR " SATA II" drive as the only HD on a factory fresh
motherboard (I have a failed controller on the original). (ASUS P4V800D-X)
whrn XP install try to set up the partitions. The Motherboard see's a 250GB
drive as "Master 3". The BIOS is set to SATA-IDE, that is RAID disabled.

When I built my system originally, this version of XP install (same CD)
quite happily recognised a 160GB IDE Maxtor and partitioned into 120 + 40 no
problems.

What's going on?

TIA

I was under the impression you needed XP with SP2 to format anything larger
than 132GB during a fresh install. Perhaps there is a difference between
SATA & PATA. What happens if you try to use the 160GB drive you mention or
are you keeping that safe for the time being.

I don't want to move the 160G drive because it's THE drive! The SATA drive
suggests LBA is not enabled in XPSP1 installation kit for SATA. I'll try an
XP-SP2 install later today and see what happens and post back.

Google suggest pre August 2002 releases of XP are not LBA enabled, I wonder
if that covers SOME versions of SP1 but not all?

The word in these newsgroups is that SP1 is a must for 48-bit LBA so my
guess is something else is wrong.

Does the BIOS see the full size of the drive?

What model number is the drive ?

The model number is: Maxtor 6V250F0 250GB 7200rpm SATAII 16mb Cache

The BIOS shows the model number and the disk size.

Assuming you have win installed, by refering to this kb article
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;303013&Product=winxp
are the registration entries correct? ie do they show big Lba enabled?

I just have a system with an unformatted hard drive, I will install the
RAID driver see what happens. I've built a slipstreamed install CD which
will start to get this puzzle solved.

Once this is up and running I will post back what fixed what problem.

Many thanks

Steve
