I am trying to load Office XP and Mcafee Internet Secuirty. for both of
these I have the following problem: - " The Windows Installer Service could
not be accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in safe
mode, or if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your
support personnel for assistance."

I have deleted my user ID in case it was corrupt

I have gone to http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_abc.htm and checked files
exist in the right place and are registered correctly. The link to DirectX 9
removal does not work - can anybody advise on how to remove this and whether
safe to do so?

Any other ideas for fising the problem

I meant to add - additionally OSA.EXE appears to be hogging 97% of processing
power - not sure if this is related or not.

I would be grateful if anyboady has any ideas

Thanks

Matt

thanks for your help. I have followed the instructions and with the
addition of manually restarting the installer have managed to uninstall
office (and am assuming that at a point I will be able to reinstall).

Installation still fails for Mcafee Internet Security. One of two things
happens - the installations starts, extracts files etc.. and then jsut stops
or it gets to the next stage gives me the option of custom or full install
and then errors towards the end telling me the installation was interupted.
I have done the obvious things like remove all references to Mcafee in the
registry prior to trying to reinstall.

OSA.EXE - I know this process is OK but it is hogging all resources - even
after removing office! Some other programs cannot even start when it is
running as they have insufficient resources.

Should I reinstall XP or are there other thngs to try?

One final thing - I loaded XP Office 2002 SP3 shortly before my troubles
began. Could this be a clue?

Many thanks

Matt
