Installed SP2, now cable internet connection doesn't work

Well, everyone here made me feel pretty confident about
installing SP2 and how important it was to install.

The install went fine, it came up fine (no blue screen of
death (yet)). Right now the only problem I have is my
cable modem internet connection doesn't work anymore. Its
not my cable modem, I use a router and my other PC is
connecting fine. I tried resetting the router, cable
modem, everything and I still get no connection from my
SP2 installed computer.

My network connections are showing my 1394 COnnection and
my Linksys LNE100TX Fast Internet Connection card as being
connected. Any advice as to what to do now? It appears
that is the only problem I have (so far). I'm hoping that
someone here knows what I did wrong.

It is the wonderful firewall that Microsoft installed. Disable it and I
bet you will connect.

I wish it was that simple. But I have Zone Alarm 5.1.011
active and Windows Firewall disabled. I was absolutely
fine until I installed SP2.

Who exactly said it was important to install? Most experts in the pc
business say you should wait a bit.

uninstall zone alarm and setup an exception for the
router ip in the xp firewall

But its not the firewall. I was fine with Zone Alarm and
my ethernet card and router until I installed SP2. If I
disable Zone Alarm Windows Firewall takes over (which is
what it should do). I then disable Windows Firewall and
stil have the problem.

Pretty sure its not the firewall.

Yes, I get the same exact result (can't connect to
anything)

When my XP PC is connected to my router, if I run
IPCONFIG /all from a DOS prompt I get an IP address,
Gateway, and DNS servers. But I still can't connect to
anything.

Everything was fine pre-SP2.

Just for the heck of it, unplug your cable modem for about 5 minutes and try
it again. I have 3 PCs connected to a D-Link wireless router and both my
wired and wireless connections were fine.

Same result when unplugging the cable modem for 5 minutes.

I checked the driver for my Ethernet card to see if
Windows updated it and its still the same driver I had
before SP2.

Linksys support basically told that something was blocking
me from the internet and had me disable the firewalls
(which didn't work). They said the ethernet card was
working fine since I could get an IP address, gateway, and
DNS servers from my router (which is also working fine).

I don't have any more ideas to try other than backing out
SP2. Unless someone else has something else I can try.

Problem solved.

I dug up the floppy the Ethernet card came with and tried
reinstalling the Windows 2000 driver. That seems to have
fixed my problem.

Thanks for the help everyone!

Yeah, there's a couple of other areas that effect your connection to
the WAN that maybe you forgot because when you setup with Cable Tech
Support, it's like set-it-and-forget-it after a while, but you can
goto your IE icon on your desktop > right-clik it > bring up
properties > then bump up the "Connections" tab, then clickenate the
"LAN Settings" button and either make sure all those are unchecked -
or whatever your Cable guy says it should be.

Next, making sure of your Cable TCP/IP settings where is your My
Network Places, but not mine yours, and right-clik on that one > bring
up the Properties > then right-clik on the one that says Local Area
Connection - not the firewire 1394, but the ethernet one > and first
clik on the Advanced tab to make sure Windows Firewall is where you
want it - maybe off at first with a router is safe > then go through
your TCP/IP (highlight) and clik Properties to make sure those
settings are okey dokey.

Another thing later or sooner to check and remember is to bring up
your Command Prompt -- either from Start > Run > enter "cmd" -- no
quotes / or Start > Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt -- and
then these are the commands to reset your IP configuration (you can
copy and paste them at first but remember there's a space between the
ipconfig and the /[switch]:

ipconfig /release

ipconfig /renew

ipconfig /all

Your router settings should not have been effected by SP2, but
sometimes your IP Configuration might be zonked by a large system
change...

Maybe before you do anything else, just unplug your cable modem for a
couple or 5 minutes or so, then plug her back in and let that reset -
watch for the lights to handshake - then go through the above and see
what you see.

I am experiencing exactly the same problem reported by CPM.
I have a LINKSYS router, and 2 DELLs and 1 TOSHIBA connected to it.
Upgraded to SP2 on all of them. The DELL's can connect to the internet. The
TOSHIBA can't.
From the TOSHIBA, I can ping the rounter, the printer server, and the DELLs.
From the DELL's, I can ping the Toshiba (both its ethernet IP address and
its wireless IP address, so the network connections are OK.
Since I did not have this problem before the "upgrade" to SP2, I uninstalled
SP2, and tried again, but the problem remained, so I re-installed it. I've
also tried the same suggestions mentioned by CPM and by Tycoon, and others.
No solution yet.

Update... I've tried the WinsockXP solution proposed by PA Bear and it
solved the problem for me (Thanks again PA Bear!)

2. Try Winsock XP Fix (http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winsockxpfix.html) or
any of the other items found at http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/winsock.htm.

I had exactly the same problems after installing SP2 and the same
system configuration:

- my pc was connected to a cable modem via a LAN connection, and I was
using Zone Alarm
- I had no internet connectivity after SP2 upgrade, couldn't ping
anything, but was getting an ip address from ipconfig, and the pc
thought is was connected at 100 Mbps
- I had another pc wirelessly connected to the cable modem so I knew
the internet connection was up

I re-installed the driver for my Ethernet port (which is a part of the
motherboard), re-booted, and hey-presto if you can read this message
it's working again.
