Router no longer working

Recently I have had difficulty connecting to my cable modem through my
LINKSYS wireless-B 802.11b router using my desktop machine running window xp
home ed. and now running sp2, also recently installed. Prior to the sp2
install, I could obtain an internet connection through the router. Also, my
desktop is using a relatively old 3Com 3C450 Fast Ethernet Adapter to connect.

My laptop running XP professional can connect without a problem both when
connected to the router using an ethernet cable, and when operating
wirelessly.

My desktop can obtain an internet connection when directly connected to the
cable modem.

Neither 3Com nor Linksys tech. support could help. My cable modem ISP claim
that the problem is not with their product as well.

Does anyone have any Suggestions?

Thank you in advance-

The Linksys 802.11b router is fairly old now. So is the 3Com. As always
in t-shooting, do one thing at a time and test after each change.

1. Swap out the 3Com for a known-working NIC.
2. Swap out the desktop's ethernet cable.
3. Put the desktop's ethernet cable into a different port on the router.
4. Swap out the router for a new one.

Did the wireless non-connectivity issue start right after the SP2
update? I had similar issues after the SP2 update. Go into Network
Connections and see if your wireless connection has been bridged
(that's what happened to me). I deleted the Network Bridge, and my
connectivity issues went away.
