Installed SP 3 - no visible changes though.

Downloaded and installed SP 3 without a hitch.

Except for a prompt at reboot to turn on Automatic Updates (I do it
manually), I did not see any visible functional changes at all. Did see more
detailed explanations in Local Security Settings, however.

After removing the uninstall files (made an image before and after) I found
the total system size increase 'marginally' by less than 40 MB. This machine
is always fully patched and up-to-date.

Boot is a trifle faster now though!

Regards.

If you use the Remote Desktop client - you will notice it is a little
different as well.

Can you explain that a little more Shenan? In what way is it a little
different?

SP3 was released yesterday, I think. I used the following link
posted in these columns to download it. It is the final release
(not a beta!).

HTH. Regards.

Yes... and no.

Windows XP SP3 was supposed to be released to the general public via
Window/Microsoft Update and Microsoft Downloads yesterday. It was
post-poned due to a problem that would mess up some small percentage of
users (specifically those using Windows XP to run their small/medium
business and some specific software.) For the normal user not running a
business off their computers - it likely will not give any issues.

[I know that, you know that, but JP said he didn't notice any functional
changes.]

MS plans to put some filters on the Microsoft sites to prevent users who run
Microsoft Dynamics from being offerred SP3 until MS completes a patch for a
problem with the MD software. Once the filters are in place users who do
not have the software installed will be able to upgrade as immediately if
they want to.

Have tried three times to download from the above link but it sticks at
99% each time.

After initial download, another box opens which I think says "copying".

Then it hangs. Task manager shows two versions of the file "Not
Responding".

Downloaded with AV and firewall disabled.

Perhaps this link has somehow been disabled pending the filters that are
going to be applied?

I just tried the link and the download completed without difficulty.

If it were disabled you would not get any download at all. You most likely
would get an error message. Doing a disk cleanup to clear out your internet
temp files may help.

I then noticed that SpywareBlaster had already had some protection
removed. I can only assume that this was what was going on in IE.

Doubtful: SpywareBlaster doesn't include real-time protection. Its default
protections (assuming they're all enabled) do include a long list of domains
placed in Restricted Sites zone, however. The changes installing SP3 makes
to the Registry may have come into play here.

So as you've observed, it would probably be best to disable all
SpywareBlaster protections before installing SP3. After installing (and
rebooting twice), check for updates before re-enabling all SpywareBlaster
protections. (A SpywareBlaster update was released 01 May-08.)

To fully disable Spybot Tea Timer (if enabled), see

Cracked it. Seems I had two problems.

Looked in Event Viewer, nothing under Applications but in System there
was a log telling me that there was not enough space in System Restore
and that the service had been suspended. Duly turned off SR to clear all
restore points, rebooted, turned it back on and created a "Pre SP3"
restore point.

Thought that was it but download hung again.

Looked in Task Manager and IE was going crazy, although only the
download window was open.

Suddenly the window disappeared. Set about disabling AV, immunisation in
Spybot S&D and SpywareBlaster prior to install.

I then noticed that SpywareBlaster had already had some protection
removed. I can only assume that this was what was going on in IE.

Didn't give it a thought that SpywareBlaster would affect the download,
only the install.

Anyway. now have SP3. Installation went smoothly.

So, anybody having similar problems, check SR and disable protection in
Spybot and SpywareBlaster prior to download, not installation.

Downloading was my problem. The first attempt at installation went
perfectly (after disabling AV, XP firewall and Spybot immunisation of
course).

Unless you'd fiddled with its settings, the Windows (XP) Firewall would not
have been involved here.
