Installing SP-2

Hello:

I'd like to update some of my applications, and they won't update, unless I
have Windows XP SP-2 installed.
BUT!...

Everytime I try to install it, It'll start installing "Service Pack 2", then
after about 4 mins, a sign saying "Access Denied" pops up, and then it
proceeds to uninstall what it had just installed.

I'm kinda "stuck" because I'd like some updated versions of my IE, Windows
Media Player, and some newer antivirus updates, but none of them will
install without SP-2,
That goes for SP-3 also, even that won't install unless it sees that I have
had SP-2 previously installed. I currently have SP-1.

What can I do to get SP-2 to install,

and...

Re-installing my OS is out of the question, I'd loose to much if I did that.

P.S. I have asked this question before, about 3-4 weeks ago, and today I
logged on to see if there were any new answers, and I can't find any of my
past posts.
How long do they last, and why can't I find ones from just a few weeks ago,
that were answered,
(Yes I used "find" and put in the dates "before and after") but still
nothing with my name appeared?

Did you follow the procedure outlined here, as shown in one of the earlier
replies

As for 'to much to loose' do you not have verified backups? what will you do
when the hd fails?

Look into cross-posting as opposed to multi-posting for the future. Saves
everyone time and effort.
