I've been having a lot of trouble installing XP. I've
gone through all the ahrdware stuff, and can't find any
problems anymore (have turned off both level 1 & 2
caching and legacy USB support in BIOS). Installation
still freezes on me though every time.

It freezes usually before the date/time/numbers
configuration and product key promt, but sometimes
afterwards, so I can be pretty sure it isn't one
particular file.

Anybody have any idea how I can get the thing stably
through installation?

Asus p4pe-x MoBo
P4 3.0 GHz
1024 MB DDR RAM
200 GB HD (20 GB NFTS partition for Windows)

You say you have check all hardware what about your cd drive, have you checked it to make sure it is reading right?
