Installation

I just recently bought a new hard drive and I needed
software to put on it. So I bought the Windows XP Home
Edition. But it won't let me install it. I don't really
know how to go about it but I think it's because Windows
XP is an expansion and I need a Windows platform like
Windows 2000 or something. But I really don't know what I
can or have to do, can someone please help me out? Thanks,
