Installation / Updation Problem

Hi,
Today I downloaded the new version of Windows Defender. But was unable to
install it because error was that Windows Installer 3.1 is required. I
downloaded it too from Microsoft site and then again tried to install but No
Luck...this time an error came "A required update to Windows Update is
available at the Windows Update website. To view a list of all installation
requirements, visit the Microsoft website:
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=63848".
Then I also tried to install the old version but that is not
updating...showing error 0x80244018. Please help me...as I've installed
Microsoft Antispyware Beta and that will expire on 31st May.

Hallo Rana,

your os must be on SP2 with XP to work with Defender, so get all the
updates for SP2, if you use 2000 then SP3 is needed.

I suspect that you'll be able to install the new Windows Defender just fine,
if you persist a little.

Just go to Windows Update-- http://update.microsoft.com

do an Express scan, and apply all updates offered. I would recommend
repeating that process until no more updates are offered. At that point you
should have no trouble installing Windows Defender--and your machine will be
up to date with critical security patches that you need.

Is there a way to get the latest Windows Update DLLs if you have no internet
connection?

If the installation of Windows Defender was good there should be a direct
link to the prerequisites so you can download it and install them manually.
In corporate situations where Windows Update and installation is disable by
Group Policies it is necessary to do it this way.

I think Microsoft's intent is to not intentionally do an end run around
corporate policies. If WSUS is used to distribute patches within the
corporate network, Windows Defender definitions can be made available this
way--and a number of WSUS administrators have done this since release. That
begs the question of exactly what the prerequisites are--but I haven't seen
that issue come up in the context of WSUS installs.
