My pc is winXPsp2 ,ie 6.0, and I have download GDI and windows installer3.1.

I also hope there's more info, unfortunately this is the only error message
I got.
I did try to go to windows update and do a quick scan, but my group policy
dosen't allow that.

Any one?

I am receiving the same message. I am running Microsoft AntiSpyware version
1.0.701 on Windows XP. I also know of others who receive the same message
when trying to upgrade. I included the AntiSpyware diagnostics if that helps.

Hello. I figured out I needed to enable my MS Windows update and install a
permanent copy of the package installer (KB898461) and the Windows Genuine
Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130). Once this is done the program will
install fine and then you can deal with the hasn't been updated problem that
is well documented.

Thanks, Al--I'll try that list with others and see whether it does the job.

Excellent.

Within the program, Windows Defender updates via AutoUpdate, which may be
directed to a local corporate server via policy.

You can also update via WindowsUpdate (which, of course, ALSO may be
restricted by corporate policy.)
