Dear Community:

I am trying to upgrade my Microsoft Anti-Spyware beta to Windows Defender
beta2 from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...AFA4-F7F14E605A0D&displaylang=en&Hash=96K86W7

I have Microsoft Windows 2000 version 5.00.2195 SP4
and have Windows Installer 3.1 (KB893803) also installed, which (according
the README) is all that I need.

My question is why do I get the following error when I then try to install
Windows Defender beta2?

"Windows Defender Installer Information: A required update to Windows
Update is available at the Windows Update website.
To view a list of all installation requirements, visit the Microsoft
website: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=63848"

Thank you for your help,

Karen

Karen;

You also might need (in addition to the basic requirements) from the
release notes:

Known issues
. If you attempt to install Windows Defender (Beta 2) on a computer
that uses Windows 2000, you might see the following message: "This software
requires GDI+. Please load the Windows 2000 Security Software Prerequisite
Pack." See this Microsoft Help and Support page for steps to resolve this
issue.

Some W2K systems have this installed some do not by default. In addition,
it's highly recommended that you visit Microsoft Update, select Express
(Get high-priority updates), and apply all offered updates:

http://update.microsoft.com

As there are many pre-requisite files which are needed from Windows Update
and definition updates within Windows Defender will fail until you have
these updates installed. It just might save you some grief later.

I agree with Dave's prescription. You don't need GDI+--the message about
that is quite specific, as I recall.

I don't have a list of what is needed--all I can say is that if you go to
Windows Update and apply all critical updates (i.e. those offered on an
express scan--that will be enough.

I would agree if you said that the list at the website is insufficient.

I have a Windows xp media center edition SP2 and the windows defender wont
let me install it because it saids i need a windows installer 3.1 or later.
What do i do?

Go to Windows Update, do an express scan, and install everything offered.
Repeat this until nothing is offered, then retry the install.

Thank you to Dave M and Bill Sanderson MVP for your quick and informative
response (and being polite about it too).

Unfortunately, I was trying to apply this to my work computer -- for which I
have local admin rights to my own machine but do not have network admin
privileges.

When I tried to use the link that you have kindly provided, I unfortunately
received the following error message: Network policy settings prevent you
from using this website to get updates for your computer.

Now I know that the global network admin has disabled the automatic Windows
update feature (which causes some problems) globally throughout the company.
I am assuming that the error message has something to do with the disabling
of this feature.

So, I think (unfortunately) that I will not be able to install this Windows
Defender on this work computer under the current circumstances.

However, I thank you both for trying to help me -- it is truly rare to find
nice people in the world.

With appreciation,

Karen G.

You're welcome!
I agree with your conclusions. Your company has set policies that prevent
your use of the application. You could ask whether those policies might be
tuned to permit its use, but this may not be easily accomplished.
