I tried to upgrade my Windows 98 SE to Windows XP Home
addition and it won't boot up! It makes it to the XP
Windows slash screen and then it locks up. Help!

Hi Ronnie,

Hit F8 at boot, are you able to access Safe mode? If so, start/run msconfig
and start disabling programs and services that load at boot until you can
figure out which is causing the stall. See:

How to Troubleshoot By Using the Msconfig Utility in Windows XP [Q310560]
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=310560

If not, boot the WinXP CD and run a repair install (skip the option to
repair at first, hit F8 at the license screen, you should then be given the
option to repair an existing installation). Ensure that any BIOS level virus
detection is disabled for this, also disconnect unnecessary peripherals (at
least for now).

Did you just do an upgrade (install the new operating system "over" the
old one) or did you do a clean install (format the hard drive and
install). If the former, I'd suggest formatting the drive and doing a
clean install. Note that you will not have any of your old programs or
data after doing this, but I assume that you knew this and backed up
everything you needed. If you did a clean install and are still having
trouble, then it is most likely due to hardware problems. Installation
problems with MS operating systems are usually caused by 1) bad RAM; 2)
bad hard drive. Do hardware testing.
