installation of service pack 2 has left my computer unable to boot

A client of mine had exactly the same problem. Sadly, the
MS suggested fixes all required access to Windows to
uninstall SP 2 - a non-starter. So I re-installed at what
should have been astronomical cost to my poor client; I
spent around 18 hours on investigation, not to mention the
re-install. My conclusion was that the published SP 2 was
faulty when applied to a PC with an AMD processor; I hope
you've all (those with AMD) seen an AMD update sneak in
recently and have applied it. What I want now is
confirmation that it won't happen to the next client, not
to mention ME. So no silver bullet, only hard work seems
to solve it and if you haven't got a backup. I'm praying
for you.

Not sure I would have been as charitable. Your client should have remembered
to back up their system before installing SP 2, as recommended by Microsoft.
You could have had them back up and running in minutes.
