HELP! Service Pack 2 won't Install

G

Guest

I've spent the last few days preparing my computer to download Service Pack2
for Windows XP. I ran Ad-Aware and Microsofts AntiSpyware program. I ran
HijackThis and there was nothing harmful on my computer.

I downloaded SP2 and it went through the install/configuration proccess and
then gave me a message saying "Access Denied", then when I clicke "OK" I got
a Service Pack 2 Setup Error saying "Service Pack 2 Installation did not
Complete. Select OK to undo changes that have been made". Then it
uninstalled SP2 and finally gave me another error message saying "Service
Pack 2 installation did not complete. Windows SP has been partially updated
and may not work properly".

Well, my system seems to be working, but why won't SP2 install correctly? I
downloaded the version that my automatic update told me to. I'm not sure if
that is the same as the one I find when I search the MS website...the one I
find there is SP2 Network Installation Package for IT Professionals and
Developers. Should I try that one (if its not the one I tried already)?

There is only one SP2 for Windows XP. They are all the same. The delivery
method is different.

Many people have better luck downloading the full patch (the one for IT
Professionals) and installing it like that.

On the screen for the download for IT Professionals, it says "DO NOT CLICK
DOWNLOAD IF YOU ARE UPDATING JUST ONE COMPUTER: A smaller, more appropriate
download is now available on Windows Update."

Should I download it from there anyway?

Somehow SP2 (the one via the auto-update) downloaded again, and is now ready
to install. I don't want it to install...how do I delete the download?

I had exactly this problem, i had to re-install XP because my computer
got infested with adware, spyware, trojans and worms. Although... I
finally got it to install, all i did was:
Went into Control panel > Add/remove programs > ticked 'show updates' >
uninstalled the 'Windows XP service pack 2' (half SP1), rebooted into
safe mode with networking, logged onto 'Administrator' then tried, IT
WORKED! :DDD

I'm not sure what you mean. When I go to Add/Remove Programs, there is not a
"show updates" to tick.

This may help you,

You receive an "Access is denied" error message when you try to install
Windows XP Service Pack 2

Thanks, but that doesn't really help me. Messing with the registry seems a
bit over my head...especially when I see the message "Warning Serious
problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry
Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you
reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these
problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk."

I'll continue to read up on it, but any other suggestions, or advice on how
to fix the registry in lamens terms?

I did step one and found the following error messages:

2193.828: DoInstallation:DoRegistryUpdates failed
1768.703: DoInstallation:DoRegistryUpdates failed
2623.610: DoInstallation:DoRegistryUpdates failed

OK, now we can proceed with Step 2 in the KB article. In Step 2 a, you need
to enable verbose logging. Follow the directions and you should have no
problems.

If any "Error 5: Access is denied" messages are found in the entire log,
please write the registry location and post back with results.

The description about enabling verbose logging says I should back up the
registry first. This is where I'm getting confused. Do I need to backup the
whole registry (sounds complicated) or just "export the keys in the registry
that you plan to edit" (I'm not sure which keys those are)?

Well, I backed up my registry. Then I did exactly what step 2 and step 3
said. I enabled verbose logging (one question about that, when it says to
type "0000FFFF" in the Value Data box, are those four zeros or four letter
O's?). Anyhow, I then tried installing SP2 again, and when I got the "Access
Denied" error, I ran Setupapi and searched for "Error 5: Access is Denied"
and found it listed a number of times. Each one was the same as the example
given in step 2. It was...

"#-007 Deleting registry key HKCR\vnd.ms.radio
#E033 Error 5: Access is denied."

....so I ran the "regedit" and went to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT and went into the
permissions of the "vnd.ms.radio" registry and checked allow "Full Control"
and "Read".

Then I downloaded SP2 and tried installing again, only to get the "Access
Denied" error again. I searched again for "Error 5: Access is Denied" and
SOME (not all) of the listings that it found no longer say "#-007 Deleting
registry key HKCR\vnd.ms.radio
#E033 Error 5: Access is denied."....but they now say "#-007 Deleting
registry key HKCR\.AudioCD #E033 Error 5: Access is denied."...notice there
is a difference.

So I went into HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT and changed the permissions for the
".AudioCD" registry. Now I'll be trying to install again.

Good to hear, post back with results.

Remember to disable the Verbose logging when you are done. If you need help
let me know.

"Access Denied" again. This time it found the following Error 5...

"#-007 Deleting registry key HKCR\.DVD
#E033 Error 5: Access is denied."

....so I changed the permissions for .DVD as well. How many more of these
can I expect? Is there going to be a new permission that needs to be changed
each time I try to download SP2? It takes about 1 & 1/2 hours to download,
install to the point it fails, then uninstall...so I'm done for tonight.
I'll try again tomorrow so please check this thread again in case I still
need help. Thank you.

Stop using the Windows Update to try and install SP2. Go ahead (before you
quit for the night) and start the download of the Full SP2 package. In this
case - ignore the "for one computer, do this" and "For IT professionals"
part - anyone can use this - same as the one you get from
windowsupdate.microsoft.com anyway. It will safe you testing time and you
can burn it to CD and have it for the future. (Lots more you can do with
it - but that's all I will mention now.)

Direct Download of Service Pack 2 (SP2) for Windows XP

Didn't realize you were using Windows Updates, I assumed you already
downloaded the IT version of Service Pack 2. Please download the IT version
of Service Pack 2 to speed up your progress. Also I would follow Shenan's
advice on burning SP2 to a disc for future use.

Your question about "How long is this going to take?" Well I won't lie here,
it could take a long time, all depends on how many Access Denied errors
occur. But I think you are doing a great job.

I wonder if I can join in with a similar problem.

I gave up on trying to download SP2 at home and ordered the CD from
microsoft. It autoruns ok, copying a lot of files across, and then ...
nothing (the hourglass appears fleetingly, then it's business as usual). No
installation takes place, no error messages.

I've tried re-starting and re-installing a few times - same story.

Any ideas?
