Installation of drivers for Laserjet 1012 - spooler subsystem encounters a problem in XP

I upgraded a system from Win 98 to XP. All went smoothly except for the HP printer drivers. There is an HP PSC 950 and an HP Laserjet 1012 connected to USB. When I upgraded, the 950 worked fine but the 1012 did not exist. I tried installing the XP drivers for the 1012 - installation went to the end, then got "spooler subsystem app encountered a problem" and "RPC server unavailable". I manually uninstalled all printer drivers including the PSC 950 per info from one of the Microsoft Knowledge Base articles. When I re-install the 1012 I still get this message. I can re-install the PSC 950 with no problems. Has anyone encountered something similar to this and have any tips? Thanks...
