Installation confusion

Hello,

My old HD fried so got a new one. A friend put the new HD in and installed
XP Home Edition when I really wanted him to install XP Professional.
However, if I go to Change/Remove, it tells me that XP Professional is
installed. I went to Control Panel thinking that he must have made this a
multiple boot, but only XP Home Edition is on the list.

So is XP Professional installed or not? If it is, how do I solve this
issue? If I uninstall XP Home, will XP Professional take over since it
appears it is already installed? Should I reformat and start from scratch?

Any input is appreciated. Thanks.

Hi

From Start>Run type

winver

You'll see which version is installed then.

Thanks. I just did that and the "About Windows" screen says, "Windows XP
Home Edition." Then the message below says, "Microsoft Windows, Version 5.1
(Build 2600.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519:Service Pack 2)."

So what is the best way to change this from Home to Professional without
creating any headaches for myself?

Hi

You'll need an XP Pro upgrade disk. Best to make a backup of your data
files for later use.
