Install XP Home OEM over XP Pro

R

Rod Janson

Hi,

New computer, C: partition mirrored from old computer over to the new disk.
This was a unregistered XP Pro.

Now we have a XP Home license / cd and we need to install this XP Home over
the XP Pro partition to retain all settings and data.

I'm sure that the OEM XP Home will complain when we try to install it over
the copied XP Pro files. How do we tweak this so the XP Home can be
correctly installed and registered?

Thanks a bunch for tips on how to solve this problem

best regards

Rod

You could allow the hard disk to be formatted at the
beginning of the setup process.

I don't understand.

How can I retain all data with a reformatted disk? The whole point with my
question was how to keep all 'old' settings, drivers and applications over
in the XP Home install.

I have never tried this. Your best bet would be to ask the
experts in a WinXP newsgroup - this one focuses on
Win2000 questions.

what you need to do is backup your data
then perform a clean install...
then copy your data back and reinstall your apps.

some of your settings may be retained...
such as email (for example) by copying over your .dbx files
but you will not actually be able to retain all of your settings.

if you do not like that option then you will need to get a legal copy of XP
pro
and perform a "repair" installation

Have to agree with John on this one Rod, as far as I am aware XP Pro will
upgrade from Home but not the other way round. Think you will have to back
up and start a fresh copy.

No...this is not possible; it would be a 'downgrade' and you can't do it the
way you wish. Back up your data (might use the files & settings transfer
wizard) and do a clean install of XP Home by booting up and
deleting/creating the partition....
