install wizard

Okay you MVPs. This is a test. This is for a VERY MVP. After uninstalling my
Epson printer, I installed a Canon. The wizard would not stop coming up
during a given session. I went to the registry and deleted as much as
possible of the epson. Some would not go away. Now I get a wizard error once
per boot. Something about a missing line in the inf. Not only that, but the
Brother printer started doing the same thing. The registry shows a growing
list of Brother keys. I have tried to uninstall and reinstall the brother
several times thinking it was less of a culprit.

I note, interestingly, that when the printers are reloaded, they remember
that they are shared. I deleted the printers from my other two computers to
see if that helps and it does not.

I note that I have folders in the spool directory. The canon is in its own
directory and also in one with the brother. There are 4 "skip" folders that
are empty. In the past, I have deleted the named folders in here before
reloading my printers to see if that would help.

There has to be a way to get these usb devices back to where they were so
that the wizard stops coming up.

Try navigating to HKLM-System-CurrentControlSet-Enum-USB in Regedit. Now
find which ones are causing the problems by expanding each one and
checking the descriptions. Once you find the printers that keep
installing or messing things up, delete the folder it exists under (the
one starting VID_Xxxx). This will remove the USB connection information
and cause it to reinstall the proper information this time through. I
suggest uninstalling all printer software, reboot, and reinstall them
all with the most up-to-date software. Not exactly sure what you are
talking about the spool directory for though :)

What are the TS keys about? I am finding and deleting the unused keys now.
Hoping for good results.

Deleted a whole bunch of entries regarding the printer and the usb.
Reinstalled the printer. The Canon wizard could not detect the printer. I
closed it and installed the printer manually. Rebooted. The XP wizard came
up and same message:
....a line was not found in the inf.

Not sure what you are talking about TS keys. It sounds to me like the
software is messed up, not Windows. Have you tried using the CD that
came with it or new software off the internet? Finally, if all else
fails, you can try a Repair operation on Windows, then try installing
the software again.

In the same area as the keys you describe, there are TS keys.
There are articles about this on the internet, but they describe repairs to
scanners or video cards.
The error, and I can't find it on Microsoft's site, is this:
The required section is not found in the inf file.
This is a Microsoft problem.
