Unable to install scanner

I had a multifunction machine (Epson stylus cx 5600) that crapped out - the
printing function, not the scanner. I purchased a Brother multifunction
machine but had considerable trouble installing the scanner driver. Tech
assistance wasn't much help, so I returned the machine and got another Epson
(6600) thinking that since the original scanner worked OK I wouldn't have
any issues with the new one. Unfortunately, I'm having the same problem and
I guess there's something with my XP setup that has changed since I
installed the 5600 about a year ago. (I have installed SP2 and all the
numerous updates). I'm assuming that something related to SP2??? is causing
the problem. The printer itself has installed properly; it prints from
various programs; copies; shows up in the printer folder, etc. It seems that
the issue is related solely to the scanner.

The scanner software appears to install properly. When I turn on the machine
and connect the USB cable, the "Install new hardware wizard" comes up. When
I select install automatically, the wizard searches for a while and then I
get the following popup:

--------------------------
Found New Hardware Wizard
There was a problem installing the hardware:
Epson Stylus CX6600
An error occurred during installation of the driver
The required section was not found in the INF.
Click Finish to close this wizard
------------------------------------

Any thoughts as to where I can start looking for the problem? Per tech
support I downloaded most recent drivers and installed, but the above popup
still came up. Every time I reboot the "install new hardware wizard" comes
up and then I get the popup again.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated as this has been going on for a
week now.

Reset

Try this-unplug machine from power outlet, remove USB cable, remove scanner
driver.Next-install scanner driver, plug into power source, install USB cable
and reboot.Good luck.

Did that just before I posted my problem. When that didn't work, I figured
someone out "there" may have the solution. The thought of reinstalling XP
gives me the chills!

Thanks for the suggestion

how about this uninstall the drivers, reboot, plug in the scanner printer,
when the hardware wizard comes up and any windows pop up, cancel all. Then
put in installation disk and try it that way.

GTS

Check in Device Manager for any hidden entries (View / Show Hidden Devices)
related to the old scanner(s). If any, delete them and uninstall reinstall
again.

Interesting. When I view the hidden entries, I don't see the Epson printer
listed although it seems to work properly! I have an old laser printer
connected to a serial port and that one shows up, but the Epson printer
doesn't. Both printers show up in the "Printers and Faxes" folder in
Control Panel!?

Epson scanners, printers and multifunction machines are very picky about how
they get installed. You must follow the instructions from Epson to the
letter. Do not turn on, plug in or mess with the machine until the Epson
installation prompts you or you are instructed to do so by the manual.

I would uninstall the drivers and all related software, unplug the machine
and proceed as if you just took the unit from the box and were installing it
for the first time.

Kevin,

This same problem occurred when I attempted to install a Brother
printer/scanner, so it's not an Epson problem. I'm fairly sure it's a MS
problem, but can't figure out how to get around it. Also, I had an Epson
printer/scanner installed properly before I purchased the Brother and this
new Epson; so something has changed since my first successful install of the
old Epson and the new one.

OK, your suggestion partially worked. After the "Found New Hardware Wizard"
popped up, I dismissed it and started the Epson CD, selected install drivers
and off it went. Unfortunately, when the screen popped up advising to
connect the USB cable and turn on the machine, since the machine was already
on and connected, the installation hung at that point and wouldn't proceed
any further. The only thing left to do was end the program through task
manager. However, that procedure did manage to get the printer properly
installed as it now appears in the hardware manager (prior to this process
it was not showing up although the printer appeared to work properly).

I then attempted to install the scanner using the "add imaging device"
button in the "Scanners and cameras" folder in Control Panel; however, the
appropriate wizard failed to open up. I then attempted to install using the
"Add Hardware Wizard" which found that the scanner wasn't appropriately
installed. The installation failed several times. I did note that on two of
the attempts I was able to select an "inf" file on either the CD or in the
"Windows/inf" folder. The one on the CD was the older of the two and that
one failed with the same error message I originally posted. The second "inf"
file in the "Windows/inf" folder was a newer version from updated scanner
drivers file downloaded from Epson.com. That attempt also failed with the
same error message I originally posted (shown below).

Any other thoughts would be appreciated as I at least appear to be half way
there.

Try this site: http://www.coribright.com/windows/ You can also post to
microsoft.public.windowsxp.print_fax where these types of multifunction
device problems are frequent.

Epson Tech Support finally got back to me with the below response. I did
check my reg file and the Registry Key for scanners is NOT in my registry.
Since the scanner is the only hardware that didn't install, this Registry
Key MAY be the answer; however, I have no idea where to find a replacement
key. None of my backups are old enough to predate the problem. If I find it,
how do I get it into my registry to see if that solves the issue??

Thank you for contacting the Epson Connection.

'An error occurred during the installation of the device. The required
section was not found in the INF'

This error can happen during the installation of any hardware type.
Completely removing and reinstalling the drivers or using the latest
drivers does not correct the issue.
This error is a result of a missing Registry Key located in the following
directory:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class The keys stored
in this directory are used in conjunction all of the different hardware
categories found that can possibly installed on a computer ranging from
printers to scanners to CD-ROM drives, etc. These Registry Keys are System
Keys and do not get added or deleted through the installation of any of our
drivers. Instead our drivers require that keys be present in order to
fully complete the installation and configuration the product on the
system. These usually get deleted by accident as result of someone
purposely going into the Registry in an attempt to troubleshoot their
system.

For scanners the following Registry Key is missing:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{6BDD1FC6-810F-11D0-BEC7-08002BE2092F}

For printers the following Registry Key is likely missing:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E979-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Other Registry Keys in the same directory can also be missing, resulting in
the same error message. Regardless, this is a system issue. Please contact
your computer vendor or Microsoft to get the missing Registry Key restored.
The issue can most likely be resolved by copying the affected key from
another computer and then merging it in the Registry of the affected
computer

Hi, I am sorry if this is posting in the wrong place, but I can't figure out
how to post a new question. My problem: I have a 1-yr-old Dell computer &
scanner (Dell Photo AIO Printer 922) and it all worked fine until recently we
had a virus & had to blank everything out & start over. So now everything
works except when I try to scan something using the software that came with
my package (in My Pictures) I get a message that says "The computer cannot
detect the scanner or camera" and suggests I Add Device in Control Panel (it
is already added there). Also, I can scan using this other software that pops
up if I hit the scan button on the actual scanner, called "Dell photo AIO
printer all-in-one center," but it says I will have to pay if I want to use
it after the trial period which ends in two days, which I don't want to do
since I already have software on my computer. Any ideas how I can get the
control panel/software to recognize my scanner? Thank you, Shari

If you have an All in One printer, you would need to remove and reinstall the
software drivers that were shipped with the printer. This should fix your
problems.
