Install Vista over XP or reformatted hard drive

I just received the upgrade disks for Vista Home Premium and it offers
two options - over XP or clean (strongly recommended).

Which method should I use.

I was about to choose the clean option but then hit a snag backing up
my files. I had no problem creating a recovery disk but can not seem
to get the backup utility to work. I will keep trying to backup my
files if there is a significant advantage of the "Clean" option.

The significant advantage of a clean installation is that it removes
a whole level of potential conflicts and complexity.
