fragmented files all over hard drive after a clean install

I have just clean installed vista premium over xp MCE but when I run a third
party disk defragmenter (diskeeper for vista) it shows two lots of paging
files and clumps of fragmented files all over my 300gb Maxtor hard drive.
How can this be? why can I not defrag these files and move the other files
to the begining of the drive for faster access?

I don't know, but doesn't Vista have auto schedule defrag?

May be wait a while and see if it does it itself?

I'm not sure why you would expect your disk to be defragmented after
installing the OS. This is probably the time that it will be the most
fragmented, (install has to write and re-write all sorts of files). Defrag
it and off you go. Also, defragmentation as a speed-up is way overrated in
NTFS systems.

mmm, I suppose I am used to seeing all of the red (fragmented files)
magically disappear in xp when I run the defrag tool. Even if I ran
diskeeper in xp it would put the files to the front of the volume and
defragment all of those nasty red files. This doesn't happen in Vista

Vista seems to have quite more system and locked files than XP. You'll
always have a certain level of fragmentation (system restore files being on
of the biggest fragmented files) but it doesn't appear to hinder preformance
as these files aren't being used frequently by applications or the OS.
