Free Hard Drive Space Variations

Hi,

I have Vista Home Premium. The free space on my hard drive seems to
vary hugely over time. I use the disk clean-up utility regularly, and
the restore point clean-up get impressive results. Over the last few
days, 30GB of my hard drive had "disappeared", and the last restore
point clean-up freed almost 40GB!

So I'm just curious: what causes these amazing variations? How and why
did Vista uses up so much space, while the only install causing the
creation of the restore point since the last clean up was a recent
Windows update?

Thanks!

With vista you don't get system restore alone, you get SHADOW COPY also
known as PREVIOUS VERSIONS

Holy crap! Shadow copies are a great concept for sure, but a
background process that eats up so much disk space without the user
even controlling it is hardly a great idea! As I recall, in XP,
restore points only included the registry and key system files, but
shadow copies are a completely different thing altogether.

Well, one more thing in Vista to keep an eye on!

Thanks!
