I just got a message 10/14/04 to install two updates. It said "windows has
found two updates" How can I be sure this is from Microsoft and not some
hacker?

Is this appearing in the bottom corner of the screen, near the clock (in the
"system tray" area)?? If so, it's just the Automatic Updates service doing
its job and its completely legitimate. (If a hacker had the ability to make
his malicious stuff appear down there, he has already taken over your system
anyway.)

If it was a pop up from a web page, then it was probably a scam.
