Install problem

Win XP Pro/SP2

My PC has 2 hard drives, C: for XP and applications, D: for backups.

Yesterday I purchased a used hard drive. I disconnected D, connected the
cable and power to the used HD and formatted it. All went as expected. I had
left D:
installed in the bay but unconnected and used Western Digital's HD CD to
format the used hard drive.

I then reconnected the cables and power to D: and booted. Nothing came up.
My Computer tells me there is nothing on either drive. the window arises
that I must put a system disc in to boot my PC. I did, got an A: prompt,
nothing
else.

After all day trying to find out what I did I gave up, formatted C: and
installed Win XP Pro. When I booted the same 'system etc' came up.
I still could do nothing, always getting the same result.

With D: empty I them formatted it. Now, when I boot I get windows on C:
but my problem has not been resolved. I must have both hard drives
connected for the PC to boot and when I attempted to put Win 98SE on D:
I keep getting 'Reinsert 98 CD into drive' but when I do the same message
arises.

Can some one get me out of this mess?

Please quote enough of the message you're responding to to put your reply
into context (as I did above). Many newsgroup participants (me, for example)
don't save already-read messages and a message without a quote is likely to
be completely unintelligible to people.
