Install hangs - want to go back to Win98

XP keeps hanging on the final installation stage
(Upgrading program and system settings part).
Question 1: How do I resolve this.
Question 2: More importantly, how do I uninstall this bad
installation and go back to Win98? Tried my Win98 boot
disks but no joy.

Thanks. Help needed as I am VERY frustrated with the
whole process!!

1. Delete the Windows XP partition.
2. Create a new partition.
3. Format the new partition FAT32.
4. Install your desired Windows Operating System.
