Dual boot - Win98 and WinXP - attempting to start with Win98 but c

I know that the info below looks like I have a Windows98 problem (which is
true), but it is part of a dual-boot Win98/XP system that I need to create.

Problem: I have a Dell Inspiron 7000 laptop that I needs to use DOS programs
that are not supported by Windows XP, and some that REQUIRE Win2000/XP.

The choice has been to create a dual-boot system - Win98 and either 2000 or
XP.

After reading the "Dual boot" discussion posted on 1/16/05, I learn that the
Win98 install must come first. Problem is, I cannot load Win98. I have a
"Win98SE for PC's without Windows" disk (the original OEM disk was damaged).

I've created a Win98 boot disk through bootdisk.com....but when I insert it,
it does not specify the D: drive (CD ROM).

Is there some generic CD ROM driver that can be downloaded (or found on a
Win98 CD), so that I can initiate my dual boot system?

Now that Microsoft Virtual PC 2004 is out, you do not need a dual boot setup
to run Windows 98 or 98SE on your Windows XP system. You can run Win98 in a
virtual computer right on your XP desktop. If you want, you can run an
MSDOS 6.22 virtual computer also. In fact you can do both at the same time.

Is this a free download? I need to do this on a "$0 budget".

If you decide to go for a dual-boot system (rather than a virtual PC)
then you can load your OSs in any order, although some adjustments
may be required to restore the WinXP boot environment.

As a starting point you need to state what partitions you currently
have, and what type they are (FAT32? NTFS?).

If you go to the link provided you can see the terms of the download. There
is a 45 day free trial. You cannot do the dual boot for free either without
reformatting your hard drive and starting over with Win98. With XP already
installed, you would need something like Partition Magic or another
commercial program.

I'm afraid this is incorrect. It is possible to install Win98
onto an existing WinXP machine, even if the first partition
uses NTFS.
